When I launch the game, it seems to run OK but the game freezes for three or four seconds each second. Very strange! does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this?
All other OpenGL software run OK.

I am using Ubuntu Hardy Heron with a Geforce 8800 and proprietary nvidia drivers.

Same type of problem here, game is very slow (gpl version). In recovery mode it is a bit faster so that I can go thru the menu and select things, but it's still not playable. Music plays ok. Running it on a fresh install of Fedora 9 KDE, ATI x300 card with the free radeon driver.

Hi,

The game will be slow with the free drivers as they don't support hardware 3D acceleration. You'll need the proprietary ATI drivers for that.

I haven't seen the freezing problem, except when the texture detail is set to very high. I've tested Hardy Heron with a 7800GT and it's OK.

Are you sure radeon driver does not support hw 3D accel? For example, I have WolfMPDemo (by ID software) which plays at 90 fps very well. AFAIK it's OpenGL.

It seems to depend where you look. man radeon says 2d only for x300 on my setup, this page says some 3D support, and other places say that it has more. Adanaxis is quite demanding though - it needs fast transparency and OpenGL shading language to run quickly.

I'd be interested in seeing your glxinfo output, and knowing if the proprietary drivers are any better, if you have time.

It might have something to do with shader support then - I wonder if that is hardware or driver related?
